Slaying the Dragon Reloaded : Asian Women in Hollywood & Beyond Trailer

Are Asian American women fairly represented in the media? “Slaying the Dragon Reloaded: Asian Women in Hollywood and Beyond” examines visual representations of Asian women made by commercial media as well as independent Asian American artists. The 30-minute video documentary picks up where “Slaying the Dragon: Asian Women in U.S. Television and Film” (1988) ends. It takes a look at Hollywood representations of Asian and Asian American women from 1984 to 2009 to explore how these images reflect the significant social and demographic changes that have occurred during the last quarter of the 20th century from blockbuster films and network television to Asian American cinema. The sequel directed by Elaine Kim also showcases Asian American media makers as the proliferation of alternative media like YouTube creates more opportunities to challenge and broaden perspectives of women. What’s changed? What’s been recycled? and What we can hope for in the future?

This short documentary originally premiered at the 2011 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival (SFIAAFF). Look for it in the short program at your local Asian American film festival. It’s great to see the Asian American female perspective on the issue much like how Slanted Screen took a look from the male perspective and Hollywood Chinese from a Chinese perspective.

Slaying the Dragon offers a comprehensive look at Hollywood’s treatment of Asian and Asian American women since the silent era. How have the roles of Anna May Wong’s sinister dragon lady to seductive Suzie Wong to the subservient ’50s geisha girls affected the representation of Asian American women? From racist portrayals by white actors to play Asian characters in early Hollywood films to contemporary Asian American anchorwomen, this provocative documentary reveals how stereotypes of exoticism and docility have impacted perceptions of Asian American women.

It’s been a minute since we heard from the group IBU. The trio got together to release a music video for their track “Broken Record” off the “Inspired By U” album. Tommy Chanthasene (aka Tommy C), Mike Musni and Jonathan Shauf show what it’s like to be in relationships with ups and downs. Our relationships can sometimes take one step forward and two steps back. It’s not easy especially when the cycle repeats itself like a broken record. In the video, the guys throw in some dance choreography in the mix as well.

You can download the “Inspired By U” album on IBU - Inspired By U or at Amazon.

Lyrics to Broken Record by IBU

(Verse 1)
There will be times, when ya,
Looking around and ya,
Losing all gravity,
Falling down, get’s hard to breathe,
Working them late nights,
Fighting my last fight,
Pushing and pulling,
Going around in circles.

(Pre-hook)
(Take me away)
To another place where,
(Far, far away)
We living in a nightmare,
(There’s no other way)
Stuck in a dead end, caught in a one-way,
I’m (we’re) lost and I’m (we’re) trying to come back home but,

(Hook)
We always go round and round and back again,
We always go round and round and back again,
It sounds like a broken record, broken record, broken record.
We always take one step forward and two steps back,
It should love. It feels like a heart attack,
It sounds like a broken record, broken record, broken record.

(Verse 2)
I hear you talking and I,
Feel what you feeling and I,
Bite on my tongue and I,
Tell myself don’t start a fight.
But you start crying now,
It’s about to end right now,
Then you start walking,
And then you always turn around.

(Pre-hook)

(Hook)

(Bridge)
For all of you who knows what it’s like,
You got to be strong and face the fight,
Stop it now you’re wasting time, whoa.
Soon there will come a time,
We can’t keep changing our minds,
We living in rewind.

(Hook) repeat

Lyrics to Decipher That by Decipher

If you ain’t know the name is DC, Decipher, hoe
it’s ride or die, I drive and go like what I got a license for?
in life I’m so the early bird, the worm is like your hoe
pick her up 7 O’ clock on the dot, I’m on my Nice and Slow
when the lights are low the dice are rolled, heard life’s a gamble
could die today, rather light this choke than light a candle
got to take a shot, you light on ammo, I am Rambo
type commando, life’s a bitch or life’s a beach, I’ll die in sandals
riding manual, at the boutique switching gear
give me that, give me that rack, give me that in black, make it dissapear
this blunt is Britney Spears, hit that baby one more time
take a look at the best in the game like which way is the jumbrotron?
from where the sun don’t shine, Philly mother fucker
so what the glass as half empty? go fill it mother fucker
know what the deal is mother fucker
keep on passing that Boombastic, call me Mr. Lover Lover
I’mma soldier, war paint, stand and salute
fly as a mother fucker, fall and land on your roof
I’m acting like rapping is trapping, I’m bagging the crack in the back with a Macbook
give dap with a track and they back for the pack cause that shit is actually that good
blasted off that kush, high as solar rays
my problems go away, the L make my eyes lower case
bitch fine as Sonya Blade, flawless victory
pussy shaved on the sides, I call it Mr. T
these bars are history, know you repeat them
stay down or lay down, shoutout to K-town, soju I’m bleeding
Nobu sashimi, like bitch, I’m raw as that
lit them up, 2pac when I Hit Em Up, but they never call me back
where the laundromat? these rappers washed up
been paid our dues, you can’t imagine what it cost us
but I learned keep patient, keep working late and don’t flirt wit Satan
keep the purple blazing, we smoking roaches; exterminating
these nerds are hating, impersonating, they want to be me
should pay attention, what, you thought this shit was going to be free?
step up infront of DC like you was at the White House
it’s December 26th, somebody need to knock your lights out
Muzo the lifestyle, TBC the co-defendants
Johnnyphlo body your sloppy flow with his broken English
we Jehovah’s Witness, Dumb told me to Knocksteady
got a lot to get off our chest, yes, we top heavy
I’m on my Rocksteady, everybody want to be Bebop
haters on that happy hour, now they taking cheap shots
and they like to ask what I write these raps for, I just laugh
like if you still can’t understand it I could help you decipher that

Got a long way to go
So I got to go now
Don’t know how to slow down

Forever Endless Valentine of my Winter Heart by Wong Fu Productions

Forever Endless Valentine of my Winter Heart by Wong Fu Productions

Wong Fu Productions jumps into the world of Korean Dramas. As part of their Technology Ruins Romance series, they tackle the genre with their new short “Forever Endless Valentine of my Winter Heart”. Inspired by the Kiss “Because I’m a Girl” music video and “My Sassy Girl,” Wong Fu delivers for the fans. It’s got all the basic elements of a Korean drama: someone terminally ill, people reminiscing about the past, and a love triangle of sorts. Even the music is original by David Choi and Sam Juhn. Korean dramas definitely know how to pull at the heart, but really, how believable is some of the stuff that happens?

Parts of the set may look familiar, since Wong Fu used some of the same location as the music video Cali Cali Cali by Alyssa Bernal.
