The Cove

The Cove follows a team of activists and filmmakers as they infiltrate a heavily-guarded cove in Taiji, Japan. This cove harbors a deep secret about the slaughter of dolphins in Japan. Dolphins are butchered and sold as whale meat in Japan with the Japanese public unaware of what’s going on. This all done illegally with corrupt politician and Japanese Yakuza involved. Here’s a synopsis of the film:

The Cove begins in Taiji, Japan, where former dolphin trainer Ric O’Barry has come to set things right after a long search for redemption. In the 1960s, it was O’Barry who captured and trained the 5 dolphins who played the title character in the international television sensation “Flipper.”

But in a remote, glistening cove, surrounded by barbed wire and “Keep Out” signs, lies a dark reality. It is here, under cover of night, that the fishermen of Taiji, driven by a multi-billion dollar dolphin entertainment industry and an underhanded market for mercury-tainted dolphin meat, engage in an unseen hunt. The nature of what they do is so chilling — and the consequences are so dangerous to human health — they will go to great lengths to halt anyone from seeing it.

With the local Chief of Police hot on their trail and strong-arm fishermen keeping tabs on them, O’Barry and his team will recruit an “Ocean’s Eleven”-style team of underwater sound and camera experts, special effects artists, marine explorers, adrenaline junkies and world-class free divers who will carry out an undercover operation to photograph the off-limits cove, while playing a cloak-and-dagger game with those who would have them jailed. The result is a provocative mix of investigative journalism, eco-adventure and arresting imagery that adds up to an urgent plea for hope.

When you watch the trailer, you can see that the Japanese public has no idea what is going on. The film is in limited release. Look for it at a theater near you here. You can get the DVD here.

Mike Kim on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Mike Kim, author of Escaping North Korea, was a guest on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart yesterday. He spoke about the challenges of helping North Koreans escape to safety and freedom in China.

The first of its kind, this book provides a rare and unique inside look into the hidden world of ordinary North Koreans. Mike Kim, who worked with refugees on the Chinese border for four years, recounts their experiences of enduring famine, sex-trafficking, and torture, as well as the inspirational stories of those who overcame tremendous adversity to escape the repressive regime of their homeland and make new lives. With the permission of these courageous individuals, Kim now shares their stories and recounts his dramatic experiences leading North Koreans to asylum through the 6,000-mile modern-day underground railway through Asia.

The Academy of Art University, a community of student and professional artists, designers and broadcasters, stands in unity with Euna Lee, 2001 BFA Motion Pictures & Television alumna, and Laura Ling in adding their voices to the international demands for their immediate release.

Both American journalists were sentenced to 12 years in labor prison after being convicted of illegally crossing the border into North Korea and “grave crimes” against North Korea. The two had been working on a story on human trafficking from the Chinese side of the border for Current TV, headquartered in San Francisco.

For the first time in Northern California, Michael Saldate, husband of Euna Lee, and Ian Clayton, husband of Laura Ling, will appear together and speak at Wednesday’s vigil. See the webcast for the Community Peaceful Gathering from 6pm to 8pm.

A few weeks back there were vigils across the country for Laura Ling and Euna Lee. And Lisa Ling hitting the TV airwaves on the Today Show, Larry King, Nightline, and Anderson Cooper.

Jon and Kate Divorce Announcement

After much speculation, Jon and Kate Gosselin officially announced their divorce on last night’s show. The ten year marriage ended yesterday hours before “The Announcement” episode aired. People.com broke the news yesterday. Based on the statements in the episode, all eight kids will live in their million dollar home with Jon and Kate rotating in and out based on their day. However, holidays will be spent together.

On the divorce, both couples released official statements:

Kate’s statement:

Over the course of this weekend, Jon’s activities have left me no choice but to file legal procedures in order to protect myself and our children. While there are reasons why it was appropriate and necessary for me to initiate this proceeding, I do not wish to discuss those reasons at this time, in the hope that all issues will be resolved amicably between Jon and myself. As always, my first priority remains our children.

Jon’s statement:

This afternoon, Kate filed for divorce. Our kids are still my number one priority. I love them and want to make sure they stay happy, healthy and safe. My job is being the best, most supportive and loving father that I can be to my kids, and not being married to Kate doesn’t change that. This will be a difficult transition for all of us, but Kate and I will work out a schedule that enables our kids to have plenty of quality time with both of us at home in Pennsylvania. In terms of my marriage, it’s no secret that the past six months or so have been very difficult for Kate and me. We are no different than other couples and parents who are facing a crossroads in their marriage. I am of course deeply saddened that we are divorcing.

The Jon and Kate Plus 8 Season 5 premiere drew 10 million viewers. No word yet, how many views tuned in last night. Although the ratings are up, it is so depressing to see a marriage fall apart and the effect it will have on the kids.
