GO! OHANA : July 2011

If you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area, join GO! OHANA this Friday as they present their latest event. Coming with the summer heat, GO! OHANA proudly presents some of the hottest artists. On July 8, 2011, bands such as The Savages and Golda & The Guns alongside artists like Bochan Huy, will create harmony in their music. Come and join them in the sun and fun at the historic La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley. They’re on a mission to create a new Pan Asian Arts Movement by supporting artists and connecting them with the community.

FEATURING:

The Savages

Vallejo grown rock & roll

Golda & The Guns
The beautiful, savage sound of full grown adolescence, GOLDA SUPERNOVA arrive in splendid new-millennium rock fashion – 3rd World born, 1st World bred, with new wave appetites, fed on old school hair rock, perverted by punk, a lil’ bit of funk, and completely addicted to majestic chaos. LAVA, their first LP, is the product of struggle, stubborn individuality and torturous dedication. Tracks like “FALL,” “DIAMOND,” and “FALSE,” are all arsenic and ear candy, full of fast-paced new wave bass, classic rock riffs and the drama of a good novel.

The Launch of Bochan Huy’s Music Video, “Chnam Oun 16″
Bochan is passionately sowing the seeds of a new style of diva. Born in Cambodia and raised in Oakland, her exposure to various genres and cultures has led her to bridge tradition and innovation. Her collaboration with pianist and producer Arlen Hart has created music that is powerful, soulful and moving (in every sense of the word, just ask the DJ’s who are spinning her tracks around the world). Bochan grew up traveling around the US, singing for her father’s Cambodian rock bands. That journey is alive today in the music, which has moved from rock roots to its current inception. Stepping out from the traditional style, Bochan looks to enter a new musical age.

Just added the comedy stylings of:

His powerful stage presence has been seen at top comedy clubs around the country and internationally. Zhangster’s unique high energy comedy hits hard on social issues with clever twists. His improve is unpredictable and his audiences are always surprised by his edgy wit.

Joe Nguyen
Subtle but sharp, laid-back yet engaging, Joe Nguyen is the smart slacker beloved by audiences for his easygoing delivery and well-written jokes. Raised in the state of Georgia by immigrants of Vietnamese and Jewish descent, Joe was destined to become a stand-up comedian. His unique perspective and likeable stage presence have made him a favorite at clubs, colleges, niche shows and private events throughout the country.

GO! OHANA : June 2011

If you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area, join GO! OHANA this Friday as they present their latest event. School is out and summer is in session! Come and join them in the sun and fun at the historic La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley. They’re on a mission to create a new Pan Asian Arts Movement by supporting artists and connecting them with the community. Welcome back Cynthia Lin and see the DEBUT OF HER ALL NEW BAND, the Blue Moon All-Stars!!

FEATURING:

Cynthia Lin and the Blue Moon All-Stars

Drawing comparisons to Edith Piaf and Joni Mitchell, San Francisco-based singer/songwriter Cynthia Lin captivates audiences with a rich, outsized voice and witty, honest storytelling. Cynthia has performed as a solo artist at Go!Ohana numerous times to great review, but this month is the premier of Cynthia and her FULL BAND, the Blue Moon All-Stars!! It’s Cynthia Lin as you’ve never heard her before…

The Soonest (unplugged)

Andrew plays some drums. Greg plays guitar. Young tries to sing and play guitar at the same time but has trouble doing it well sometimes. Alex is good at the bass. Young and Andrew like music and burritos so they formed a band. Greg likes music too so he came along for the ride. We found Alex on craigslist. We thought he was going to be crazy but he turned out alright. Young saw a picture of a lion riding a horse and he chose that for our name. When the lion refused to continue riding the horses, they agreed to change the name to The Soonest.

The League of Pogi Gentlemen

The League of Pogi Gentlemen, not to be confused with the League of Pangit Gentlemen, is a group of three baby turtles who met at Berkeley and decided to write songs about Love, Chocolate, and Money. Mostly all of their songs are about girls, save the one about chocolate, and the one about Filipino Time, which actually both turn out being about girls. Drawn by a team of fairies, Lou (Guitar and Vocals), Lenny (Everything and Vocals), and Eric (Keyboard, Auxillary Percussion, Vocals) melted many hearts with song back in the heyday of 2004-2008. Wow. They’ll take your musical experience to the eXtreme.

Wendy and Brian

We are a passionate, jazzy, soul-driven duo born out of serendipity in the San Francisco Bay Area.

California Considers Shark Fin Soup Ban

California Considers Shark Fin Soup Ban

California lawmakers are considering a bill that would make the sale of shark fins in the state illegal. Assemblymembers Paul Fong and Jared Huffman co-wrote AB 376, which who essentially put a ban on sale, possession and trade in shark fins in California. Shark fins are used in an expensive, traditional Chinese soup and usually served at special occasions in the Chinese-American community. It has been an esteemed delicacy for thousands of year. The proposed ban on shark fins chips away at this Chinese tradition.

Houston Rockets center Yao Ming is throwing his weight behind the ban. He has joined with the organization Wild Aid, promising he will never eat it again and he is urging others to do the same. The Monterey Bay Aquarium, a lead sponsor of AB 376, released a poll last week stating a survey of 600 registered voters found that 76 percent of all voters and 70 percent of Chinese-Americans support AB 376. (The margin of error for the sample of 600 California voters is +/- 4.0 percent; the margin of error for the sample of 218 Chinese-American voters is +/- 6.8 percent.) Note: A good percentage of Chinese immigrants are not registered voters.

However, not everyone in the community agrees with the ban. Restaurant owners like Andrew Poon, Chinese Historical Society expert Charlie Chin, and San Francisco mayor Ed Lee oppose the ban. “That sort of thing is one of the dozens of little things people use to erode someone’s cultural identity,” Charlie Chin said.

Oregon and Hawaii have already passed similar bans. Will California be next?
