APA Month Day 16 – Far East Movement

The Far*East Movement (FM) was formed by emcees: Kev Nish (Kevin Nishimura), Prohgress (James Roh), and J-Splif (Jae Choung). The three childhood friends found their love for music fresh out of high school and created recognition for the group in the Los Angeles hip-hop scene through energetic live shows and a strong Internet presence.

Forming Catch Music Group with manager Carl Choi in 2004, the group has since been developed into a rising force destined for World recognition. The group has achievements on an independent level that some major label groups could only dream to attain. Far East Movement has embarked on 2 World Tours (including the USA, South America, Canada, & Asia). Their music has been featured on “CSI,” “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” and Justin Lin’s “Finishing the Game.”

Currently, Far East Movement is working on their sophomore album “Animal” slated for release in 2008. The album includes guest appearances by platinum selling artists Lil Rob and Baby Bash. Recently, they also collobrated with the Korean popstar Se7en on his upcoming English album.

If you are in the NorCal area (San Francisco & Sacramento), look for FM performing in your area.

APA Month Day 15 – Cheryl Burke

Cheryl Burke is best known for winning the second and third seasons of ABC’s American version of Dancing with the Stars with celebrity dance partners Drew Lachey (2nd season) and Emmitt Smith (3rd season). She was the first professional dancer to win two Dancing with the Stars championships. She is in the hunt this season as well, but has tough competition from Kristi Yamaguchi. At the Asian Excellence Awards, this Filipino, Russian, and Irish dancer picked up the Viewers Choice Award for Favorite TV Personality.

Yul Kwon opens Red Mango fro-yo shop

After failing to open a Red Mango fro-yo (frozen yogurt) shop in San Francisco, looks like Survivor winner Yul Kwon will have success further south in Palo Alto. Here’s recently engaged Yul Kwon and Sophie Tan enjoying some Red Mango.

Red Mango’s first Northern California store will be opening in Palo Alto on Sat May 17, 2008.

Red Mango Palo Alto

429 University Ave (at Kipling)

Palo Alto, CA

The company also is known for using natural ingredients in making “authentic frozen yogurt” that is both tart and creamy. Come by and taste what you have been missing out on for the longest time. It’s simply irresistible. Red Mango is the most popular fro-yo chain in South Korea. Red Mango competes with Pinkberry, which was also started by Korean Americans.

UPDATE: Yul Kwon has opened another Red Mango Location in the South Bay in Northern California. This time in San Jose at Valley Fair Mall. Store opens January 2009. Here’s the address:

Hollywood Chinese

Hollywood Chinese is a captivating revelation on a little-known chapter of cinema: the Chinese in American feature films. From the first Chinese American film produced in 1916 (Oakland filmmaker Marion Wong’s THE CURSE OF QUON GWON) to Ang Lee’s BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN nine decades later, HOLLYWOOD CHINESE brings together a fascinating portrait of actors, directors, writers, and iconic images (including Ang Lee, Wayne Wang, Joan Chen, David Henry Hwang, Justin Lin, B.D. Wong, Nancy Kwan, Tsai Chin, Lisa Lu, James Hong, and Amy Tan) to show how the Chinese have been imagined in movies, and how filmmakers have and continue to navigate an industry that was often ignorant about race, but at times paradoxically receptive.
