Fayette-Nam by the Asian American Theater Company

San Francisco Bay Area readers look for the upcoming theater production of “Fayette-Nam” by the Asian American Theater Company from June 25 through July 11, 2009 at ThickHouse. Here’s s synopsis of Fayette-Nam:

One fateful night in Fayetteville, North Carolina – on the fringes of the US Army Base known as “Fayette-Nam” – a young African American soldier goes AWOL on the eve of his deployment to Iraq… and hides out in a donut shop. He also happens to be in a love triangle with the owner of the shop and her daughter! Will they discover what they are each looking for before it’s too late? Find out in the world premiere of this dark comedy by Aurorae Khoo.

The play tries to explore the unheard voices of Asian Americans and other minorities trying to survive on a civilian street (Bragg Boulevard) in the shadow of the military industrial complex. Directed by Duy Nguyen. Starring Jon Gentry, Lisa Kang, Kathleen Mendoza, Kenneth Ronquillo, Erika Pallasigue. Get tickets here.

FREE Tickets for Dat Phan in San Francisco Bay Area

For San Francisco Bay Area readers, you can see comedian Dat Phan for FREE this weekend at Tommy T’s in Pleasanton. FREE tickets area available for Friday and Sunday! Dat Phan won NBC’s Last Comic Standing competition in 2003 and is still going strong with new and classic material!

Regular ticket price is $15-$25 but free if you get on the guestlist.

Note you have to be at least 17 years old to get into the club. They have a full bar and restaurant and there is a two item minimum purchase – food or drink. Entrees are about $20 and up, but the food is pretty good, try the beef skewers. There is no smoking. Dat Phan is really funny and does some jokes in Vietnamese. Topics he talks about are relationship with his mom and dad, finding a job, college, dating interracially, all topics we can relate to.

Vigils for Laura Ling and Euna Lee





Today, nationwide vigils for Asian American journalists Laura
Ling and Euna Lee
will be held. The two U.S. journalists, who work for San
Francisco-based Current TV – a media venture founded by former Vice
President Al Gore, were arrested March 17 near the North Korean border
while reporting on refugees living in China. Both women, accused by North
Korea of crossing into the country illegally from China and committing
“hostile acts,” will be tried on criminal charges on June 4th. Lisa Ling has hit the airwaves this week with appearances on the Today Show, Larry King, and Nightline in a plea for their safe return.

The organizers of the vigils hope to help influence a positive outcome for
Laura and Euna. Please show your support and join us in their fight for
freedom!

2009 Asian Heritage Street Celebration in San Francisco

The largest gathering of Asian Pacific Americans in the nation is back and bigger than ever, featuring more Asian American artists, more DJs, more martial arts, J-cars, a karaoke contest, anime, and FREE hepatitis B screenings. New features this year include an Asian Heritage Street Celebration (AHSC) Best Dance Crew Contest, and family-friendly carnival rides and games for children.

The 5th annual Asian Heritage Street Celebration will be held Saturday, May 16, 2009, in San Francisco’s Civic Center in front of the Asian Art Museum, leading up to the Little Saigon District. The fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some of the highlights include Emcee T, Mark Munoz UFC Fighter Filipino Wrecking Machine, Lyrics Born with Joyo Velarde, Thomas’ Apartment, Drunken Hu?, and more.
