Olympic Diver Sammy Lee : CBS PSA

As part of the commitment to diversity on CBS, they created a series of PSAs for APA Heritage Month. In this PSA, actor Tim Kang from The Mentalist talks about Olympic diver Sammy Lee, who was the first Asian American to win gold for USA in the Olympics. Here’s more on Sammy Lee:

On a summer day in 1932, twelve-year-old Sammy Lee watched enviously as divers catapulted into the public swimming pool. Sammy desperately wanted to try diving himself, but the Korean American boy — like any person of color — was only allowed to use the pool one day a week.

This discrimination did not weaken Sammy’s newfound passion for diving, and soon he began a struggle between his dream of becoming an Olympic champion and his father’s wish for him to become a doctor. Over sixteen years Sammy faced numerous challenges, but he overcame them all and fulfilled both his dream and his father’s. In 1948 Dr. Sammy Lee dove into Olympic history. A matter of seconds after his final platform dive, the scores appeared and Sammy Lee became the first Asian American to win an Olympic gold medal.

Sammy Lee’s story of determination and triumph sets an extraordinary example for anyone striving to fulfill a dream. Sixteen Years in Sixteen Seconds will inspire all who read it.

You can learn more about Sammy Lee in the children’s book “Sixteen Years in Sixteen Seconds”. Get it on amazon. CBS Cares.

Rapper Bambu released the track “Something” last month. Now he’s dropped a music video for the song. The single takes a look at domestic violence from a personal perspective. The song speaks on his family history with violence in the home, as well as his own struggles with it, even touching on the normalcy of such violence against women in our own Hip Hop culture. The DJ Phatrick produced tune samples Adele’s “Someone Like You.” The track will also be included on Bambu’s …Exact Change… re-release bonus EP, Short Changed, dropping on April 29, 2011. For now, you can download the song FREE here and here. Other music from …Exact Change… include Menacing Looks, Quit and Crooks & Rooks.

Top Chef by Jubilee Project

Top Chef by Jubilee Project

The Jubilee Project releases a video response to the tragedy that has devastated Japan. These natural disasters have taken the lives of thousands of people and many more are still missing. They felt compelled to respond by organizing a video fundraiser to support World Vision in Japan with the short “Top Chef”. It chronicles a cooking date gone wrong and features CLARA C, Jennifer Chung, Arden Cho and Jason Y. Lee.

In light of the recent tsunami in Japan, The Jubilee Project will be donating a penny for every view that this video receives in the month of March on The Jubilee Project YouTube channel. If you’d like to become a sponsor of the video and match this donation, email project.jubilee@gmail.com. Therefore, if the video gets 100 views, sponsors donate $1 and if the video gets 1000 views, sponsors donate $10. 100% of the proceeds from the fundraiser will go directly to World Vision in Japan to provide emergency supplies like life-saving food and water to those who need it most.

In addition, the Jubilee Project will donate a portion of their Concert Tour sales to World Vision. There are two events left in the tour in Philadelphia (3/19) and Boston (3/26). Finally, the Jubilee Project is pleased to announce that their video “Beautiful” is one of 16 finalists in the YouTube DoGooder nonprofit video of the year awards. Voting will end on midnight March 14, 2011.
