G.A.Y.S. (Guys Against You Serving) with John Cho

John Cho along with comedians Sarah Silverman, Tom Lennon, Dave Holmes, “Weird” Al Yankovic, Jenny Lennon and Alex Fernie put out a mock PSA for G.A.Y.S. (Guys Against You Serving). This new organization tells you exactly why they don’t want gays serving in the military. The short pokes fun at the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy of the US government.

No matter where you stand on this issue. Be sure to vote this November. Here’s a few other PSAs telling you why you should vote: Reel in the Vote with Randall Park, Officer Bart Kwan wants you to vote, Embrace Your Power with Kelly Hu and George Takei, and Power of the Swing Vote

As we get closer to the November 2nd California Elections as well as the 2010 San Diego Asian Film Festival, we’ll get a chance to hear from Asian Pacific American actors and activists on the importance of voting. They’ll share personal stories and encourage you to REEL IN THE VOTE in November. This week, actor Randall Park tells you why you should speak up and vote. It’s a painstakingly emotional moment for him. Looks like we might see PSA messages from Lynn Chen, Danny Cho, Ron Yuan, and Aaron Yoo.

Here’s a few other voting PSAs: Officer Bart Kwan wants you to vote, Embrace Your Power with Kelly Hu and George Takei, and Power of the Swing Vote

REEL IN THE VOTE is a non-partisan PSA contest and campaign to generate awareness, excitement, and dialogue to get more Asian Pacific Americans (APAs) and independent voters out to the polls this year.

Collaboratory VIII: Order to Go!

If you’re in the Los Angeles area, Great Leap invites you to come out on Saturday, September 11, 2010 for the culminating performance for their annual mentorship program,  Collaboratory VIII, exploring the environmental impact of single-use food containers and utensils.

Hosted by Amy Hill, this performance features the work of artists Janet Dandridge, June Kaewsith, Zumi Mizokami, Ayuko Sato and Shannon Shue. The evening’s festivities will also include performances by Nobuko and friends as well as a live screening of B.Y.O.Chopstix!

As a conscious effort to make their cause known, Great Leap made a music video in order to address the environmental impact of disposable wooden chopsticks. Directed by Dan Kwong and starring Nobuko, this funny yet pointed music video hopes to encourage people to “bring your own” chopsticks when eating out to help the 100 billion pairs of wood chopsticks that are thrown away every year.

Great Leap will be showing this music video at the Collaboratory VIII: Order to Go performance. For more information and to purchase tickets, go here.

B.Y.O. CHOPSTIX – don’t throw them away!

The Allergy by Wong Fu Productions

The Allergy by Wong Fu Productions

Wong Fu Productions released a short film for the American Cancer Society entitled “The Allergy”. The PSA is an effort to combat smoking and help people live a healthier lifestyle. Instead of focusing on the harmful effects of smoking, the message zeroes in on the benefits of quitting. Sometimes all it takes is the right motivation to quit a bad habit. Bad things happen when you smoke. The short is part of the “xoutcig” campaign targeted at students.

Your favorite Wong Fu Regulars are in this short including David Choi, Cathy Nguyen, and Chris Dinh. Even “shybabenicole143″ from Funemployed and Dance To This Song aka Kelley Koski makes an appearance.

Here’s brief statement from Wong Fu Productions about the short:

Henry (Chris’ character) is a smoker, and you’ll notice that no one ever tells him NOT to smoke, not even Jill (his girlfriend). Everyone’s fine with it, she just has a “special” allergic reaction. This way, it’s totally up to Henry to decide what he wants to do. If he quits, he gets his super gorgeous gf…if he doesn’t quit, he get’s an annoying David Choi. The choice (eh eh) is easy.

Fresh Air with Daniel Wu

Fresh Air with Daniel Wu
Actor Daniel Wu is a spokesperson for a brand new public service announcement in the Hong Kong market. The video is an ironic 1980s-style infomercial promoting a fake brand of canned air called “Fresh Air.” (we’ve got bottled water. why not canned air?) Canned air comes in multiple flavors and comes with a special deal. Act now before it’s too late!

The ad spoof is part of a campaign by the Hong Kong Clean Air Network (CAN). The commercial seeks to enlighten viewers by taking an absurd, sarcastic approach to the issue of health, lifestyle and air pollution. The message isn’t just applicable to Hong Kong, but it is relevant to the USA as well. Other celebrities appearing in the infomercial include Ana R., Cara G., and Simon Yin.
