Where the Road Meets the Sun trailer
“Where the Road Meets the Sun” has been making the film festival rounds. Now the award-winning movie is looking to hit a theater near you. The film is a moving story about four men whose lives intersect for a brief time in the city of Los Angeles. Takashi (Will Yun Lee of “Hawaii Five O”), a Japanese hit man, wakes up from a four-year coma and moves to LA to escape mysterious traumatic memories. He strikes an unusual friendship with Blake (Eric Mabius of “Ugly Betty”), the hotel manager who still mourns the loss of his wife to an affair he ended up regretting.

Julio (Fernando Noriega), an illegal immigrant, works at an Indian restaurant to provide for his wife and kid back in Mexico. He befriends Guy (Luke Brandon Field), a young British backpacker whose tourist visa just expired and who lives off his estranged father’s ATM card while sleeping with any girl who crosses his path.

Where the Road Meets the Sun inter-cuts between the blossoming of these two friendships. Takashi attempts to help Blake break from his past, but in the process is forced to confront his own violent memories. Julio and Guy hustle for day-to-day survival and forge dreams of a better future, but after Julio steals Guy’s passport and sells it, not only is their friendship at stake but also their lives. What follows are the wild times and often gut-wrenching adventures of four men trying to survive both emotionally and physically.

With a ton of action sequences and a monster that can withstand almost any assault, the audience was on the edge of their seats throughout the entire film. It’s “Jaws meets The Host” said one, as the indomitable creature of the deep comes to terrorize the family-like crew stationed on Sector 7. With a, “Really cool monster, some comedic moments, great action and special effects,” it’s a Korean film that strays from the norm and will keep you interested in finding out what is in store for the ill-fated crew on board. Something awaits 8,000 feet under the sea off the southern tip of Jeju Island. Here’s more on the film:

The Eclipse is the offshore drilling rig stationed at Sector 7, a mining area in the vast open sea located off the southern tip of Jeju Island. The oil drilling excavations end in failure and headquarters gives the order to withdraw.

Captain Jeong-man is sent to oversee the crew’s withdrawal from the Eclipse. However, Hae-jun, the equipment manager (played by Ha Ji-won), is adamantly opposed to the headquarters’ order, as she is certain that oil will be discovered in Sector 7. Motivated by Hae-jun’s conviction of finding oil, the Captain suggests conducting one last drilling exercise.

While Hae-jun and the crew are fully engaged in their final attempt, they lose communication with headquarters, and the crew is overwhelmed by the disconcerting feeling that something is out there. As bodies begin disappearing one by one, the few surviving need to think fast and fight for their lives in a non-stop battle against the mutant monster from the sea. Survival looks unlikely, but Hae-jun and the crew are determined to take any chance to get out of Sector 7 alive.

The film focuses on five crews representing France, Japan, South Korea, and the United States in their quest to win the Battle of the Year. Here’s a synopsis of the documentary:

Planet B-boy goes inside the international, underground b-boy scene in Japan, France, South Korea, and the United States, as they prepare for the event of their lives: The Battle of the Year in Germany, the oldest and largest B-boy event in the world. Eighteen nations send their best crews to compete at the “world cup of b-boying”. Coming from vastly different cultures, what the b-boys share above all is their willingness to sacrifice everything for b-boying as a way of life. By gaining personal insight into their lives, we see that it is their ultimate form of self-expression and creativity. With little chance of recognition or financial gain, the b-boys struggle to maintain their passion and love for their art, the original essence of hip-hop in its purest form.

Some of the b-boys and b-boy crews in the film include Gamblerz, Ichigeki, Knucklehead Zoo, Last For One, Phase T, Ken Swift, Storm, Thomas Hergenrother, and Trac 2.

The film came about before America’s Best Dance Crew and all the other dance shows came out.

Help fund Finding Kukan documentary

FINDING KUKAN is a documentary film in progress about filmmaker Robin Lung’s discovery of a lost 1941 Oscar-winning film on China and the ensuing search for information about the film’s creators — a fascinating author from Hawaii named Li Ling-Ai and an adventurous photojournalist from the Midwest named Rey Scott. The documentary is in its first phase of production and we are looking for underwriters to complete filming. Here’s more on the film:

When Hawaii-based filmmaker Robin Lung starts searching for the real life equivalent of a fictional Chinese American female detective, she runs across a fascinating memoir written by a Chinese woman from Hawaii named Li Ling-Ai and unearths a 1941 Oscar-winning documentary that Li worked on called KUKAN – an epic color film about war-torn China that has been “lost” for decades. Lung’s hunt for a heroine takes on a new dimension as she tries to track down the story behind KUKAN. She quickly discovers two other people who have their own reasons for digging into KUKAN’s amazing past: Ed Carter, the documentary curator at the Academy Archives who’s seeking the missing cornerstone of his collection; and Michelle Scott, the granddaughter of KUKAN cameraman Rey Scott, a young artist who longs to know more about her dead grandfather and the mysterious photographs he left behind.

Finding KUKAN is a documentary film-in-progress that tracks Lung and her fellow KUKAN investigators as they probe into the many mysteries that surround the movie: How did two inexperienced filmmakers succeed in getting the attention of the President of the United States and the Hollywood power Elite? How did Rey Scott get access to Chiang Kai-Shek and manage a trek across China that even by today’s standards is jaw-dropping? Was Li Ling-Ai just an inspirational muse or did she take an active part in the actual production and promotion of the movie? As the investigation unfolds, we uncover an inspiring story of two fiercely independent spirits and open doors to forgotten chapters in history.
