2011 USC CASA Culture Show : Legacy

2011 CASA Culture Show : Legacy

For those of you who are in the Los Angeles area on President’s weekend (February 20, 2011), be sure to check out Legacy, the annual production that is put on by USC’s CASA (Chinese American Student Association). This culture show will bring the audience back to ancient China, and tie all the values that were once important to the Chinese ancestors to the modern world. This is the basic plot of the play:

“LEGACY follows the journey of a contemporary young man from Los Angeles who is reluctant to embrace his heritage and unable to find his cultural identity. Upon desecrating a centuries-old ceremony, he discovers himself in imperial China, where he must navigate his way through unfamiliar territory in search of a way back home. As the entire kingdom prepares for the grand engagement ceremony between Princess Jia Rong and the legendary General Chen Hsu, a deadly plot to overthrow the dynasty looms over the horizon. It is here, amidst the fervor and excitement , that he comes face-to-face with his ancestor. “

The show will be the result of months of hard work from over 50 cast and crew members. Legacy will be shown in Bovard Auditorium (on USC’s campus) on Sunday, February 20, 2011. It’s definitely a show that you would not want to miss, filled with action, drama, and laughs. There is even a special guest performance by Joseph Vincent!

HUPA Presents “Foundations” featuring work by Tony Hong

HUPA Presents "Foundations" Featuring work by Tony Hong

For anyone who is interested in attending, Hold Up Art Lovers (HUPA) will be hosting an art gallery featuring a body of work on paper and wood that artist Tony Hong has been amassing since he has begun his bold new style of line-centric work over the past two years. The show will also feature limited edition silkscreen prints hand pressed and pulled by the artist.

Tony Hong is an emerging Korean-American contemporary artist who works exclusively in ink. While he considers himself a simple line maker, these lines ultimately form an intensely detailed image of organic matter.

HUPA curator Brian says…
“The concentration and attention to detail required to execute the pieces Hong is showcasing in ‘Foundations’ is rarely seen in today’s pop centric art world. Not only does he refocus our attention from character and brand, which we typically have seen so much of in the past years, to more basic elements of art such as line and weight, but also Hong is on the cusps of the new focus in Californian contemporary which is an emphasis on design as it pertains to fine art.”

The event will be held at 358 E 2nd Street in Los Angeles. For more information, go to the facebook event page.

A most wanted list of Asian Pacific American (APA) bloggers from across the country will participate in BANANA 2 on February 26, 2011, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the back lot of CBS Studios in Studio City, CA. BANANA 2 is a follow-up to the inaugural convening in Nov. 2009 co-hosted by Lac Su, author of I Love Yous Are For White People (HarperCollins, 2009) and Steve Nguyen, a television/film producer and head of the ChannelAPA.com’s Los Angeles division, who enlisted the help of a small group of bloggers and community activists to produce an event highlighting and amplifying the online voices of Asian Americans.

“We are excited to have a talented group of established and up-and-coming bloggers from the APA community at this second annual gathering to share their voices, knowledge, endeavors and visions with others – bloggers and non-bloggers, APAs and non-APAs,” said Su. “All of the bloggers expected to attend have unique views of their own community, and will share their progression as an APA blogger.”

The conference will provide an opportunity for bloggers and their readers to build a stronger community by beginning conversations and building relationships beyond the conference. Conference panels will include topics on using blogs and social media to create meaningful social change, working with businesses and corporations and defining the role of Asian American bloggers.

The first gathering featured bloggers from Angry Asian Man, Minority Militant, 8Asians, Neaato (Network of Entertaining Asian American Talent), Hyphen Magazine, Mochi Magazine, Channel APA, Bicoastal Bitchin’, AArising, Antisocial Ladder, Nikkei View, VisualizAsian, Kimchi Mamas, Asian Pacific Americans for Progress, DVAN (Diasporic Vietnamese American Network), bigWOWO, and Sepia Mutiny.

Conference admission is $20 per person. Participants will be able to register online here now until Feb. 25, 2011. A complete schedule of panels and presenters will be announced in late Jan. 2011.

Beatrock Music Anniversary Celebrations

Beatrock Music Anniversary Celebrations

Beatrock Music, the independent record label home to Bambu, Otayo Dubb, Power Struggle, The CounterParts, and Bwan is celebrating its first birthday! Now a year deep in the music scene with six releases under its belt, Beatrock Music has a lot to celebrate. To mark the occasion, the label is putting on two events. The first will be on December 10th at The Cellar in Long Beach. The second will be the following evening on December 11th at Pier 23 in San Francisco. Both events promise to be chock-full of live entertainment, from live music by label musicians to live artwork by the Beatrock Artists Kollective.

From San Francisco, to Long Beach and beyond; BEATROCK MUSIC has musically championed the voice of a generation, offering music fans more than the standard Top-40 fare. Since their launch in January 2009, label head Eric “Fatgums” Strand, has established BEATROCK MUSIC as the home for a diverse line up of artists.

Strand has nurtured and grown BEATROCK MUSIC from the beginning. “I started BEATROCK MUSIC to provide a platform for socially progressive artists. I wanted to help create their music. I wanted to share their music with the world.” 6 releases later, and 4 more albums in the works, next weekend marks BEATROCK MUSIC’s 1 year anniversary.

Honoring their endeared relationship to West Coast independent Hip Hop; Eric “Fatgums Strand” and his BEATROCK MUSIC family will take the party to two cities. First stop is Long Beach, California. “Our listening audience is politically and culturally active” says Strand. ”Most of whom gathered in Long Beach at a local Art Gallery/ Store, Beatrock. BEATROCK MUSIC is about continuing the safe space for artists to show their work. That’s why the 1st part of our celebration is here. Then we’ll take it to San Francisco!” Similarly, the Bay Area is home to a socially conscious and creative crowd. “A lot of our artists are based from the area. I wanted to have their fans and supporters be able to join in the party”
