The Second Annual Nikkei Community Day will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008, in Little Tokyo’s JACCC Plaza, from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Nikkei Community Day will bring together Japanese and Japanese American community groups and people scattered throughout the Greater Los Angeles Area for a one-day celebration of Japanese and Japanese American heritage, culture, and community.
This year, with the theme, “Changing Landscape: From Redress to Redevelopment to Redefinition,” Nikkei Community Day will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Japanese American redress bill and highlight the issues beyond redress that are now of concern to the community. In a symposium entitled “The State and Future of the Nikkie Community,” community leaders and interested individuals from both the English-speaking and Japanese-speaking sectors will address the significance of the bill and its impact on the community, as well as where the community is now–with the gentrification and changing land ownership in Little Tokyo and San Francisco’s Japantown–and where it is going–as Japanese American community centers consider the changes they need to make in order to survive and prosper in the future.
Community groups will share information, provide games, display crafts and sell food at booths throughout the day. Community people will display their unique cultural talents by performing on stage. Community advocates will speak at a health forum on topics to increase awareness of health issues of concern to the Nikkei community.

update:
National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development‘s (CAPACD’s) 9th Annual Convention brings together hundreds of community based practitioners, organizers and advocacy agencies in one of the largest gatherings nationwide. By bringing together actively engaged, ethnically and geographically diverse leaders in the community development field, the Convention is an opportunity to create and share a common vision and agenda, and take collective action to strengthen the APA community development movement.
This year’s theme is “Vision, Voices, Votes: Standing Together for Justice & Equity,” which emphasizes what is needed from our communities in this critical year — and the opportunities we have to lead the way as we address the foreclosure crisis facing the nation, promote long-term equitable development policies and influence a crucial residential election.

Jin (aka Jin tha MC aka The Emcee aka 100 Grand Jin aka Jin Au-Yeung) got his big break on BET’s 106 & Park, where he won seven consecutive weeks of freestyle rap battles and was inducted into the show’s Hall of Fame. Shortly after the win, Jin signed with Ruff Ryders and release his first single “Learn Chinese.” However, Jin was mismanaged by the Virgin/Ruff Ryder label with album delays and uncertainty with contracts.
His best move may have been leaving the Virgin/Ruff Ryder label to go independent. He has since released several albums, freestyle tracks, and music videos. Jin has used his skills to not only win Fight Klub battle championships, but also address racism including Hot 97’s tsumani song and Rosie O’Donnell’s ching chong incident. According to Jin’s Myspace page, he will be releasing another album in 2008 entitled “Birthdays, Funerals and Things In Between.” In the meantime, enjoy some of Jin’s previous work.
