Thirst directed by Park Chan-wook

Thirst opens today in select cities in the US. Director Park Chan-wook continues his explorations of human existence in extreme circumstances. This time throw in the currently trendy vampire character. As usual with Park Chan-wook films, Thirst is rating R for graphic bloody violence, disturbing images, strong sexual content, nudity, and language. Here’s a synopsis:

A priest becomes a vampire…another man’’s wife is coveted…a deadly seduction triggers murder. Thirst is the new film from director Park Chan-wook (Old Boy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance). Already a box office smash in Korea, Thirst was honored with the Prix du Jury [Jury Prize] at the 2009 Cannes International Film Festival.

Sang-hyun (played by top Korean star Song Kang-ho, of The Host) is a priest who cherishes life; so much so, that he selflessly volunteers for a secret vaccine development project meant to eradicate a deadly virus. But the virus takes the priest, and a blood transfusion is urgently ordered up for him. The blood he receives is infected, so Sang-hyun lives – but now exists as a vampire. Struggling with his newfound carnal desire for blood, Sang-hyun’s faith is further strained when a childhood friend’s wife, Tae-ju (Kim Ok-vin) comes to him asking for his help in escaping her life. Sang-hyun soon plunges into a world of sensual pleasures, finding himself on intimate terms with the Seven Deadly Sins.

Kollaboration Acoustic 3 will take place on Saturday, August 22nd 2009, 7:30pm at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood as the third and final Kollaboration show to take place in Southern California this year. Following the main Kollaboration 9 show which boasts 6,000 sold-out seats this past February and the recent success of Kollaboration Hip Hop and Laugh-Off, Kollaboration is bringing its Acoustic 3 show back for another unique evening for music and inspiring new talents.

As an annual talent competition, 10 musical acts were selected after a competitive round of auditions in front of Kollaboration judges. Similar to past Kollaboration performers, many of this year’s performers have already garnered well established internet followings, while others are looking to Acoustic 3 to introduce their talents to a new fan base. This year’s performers to compete for First Place and $1,000 include: Gabe Bondoc, Mike Isberto, AJ Rafael Band, Susanna Yoon, Afraid of Everest, Jinah Kim, Megan Lee, David Tran aka Applesauce, Yoori Park and Alfa Garcia. Kollaboration Acoustic 3 will be another platform for the growing number of APA artists and the greater APA community to come together to celebrate under the summer stars in an intimate and friendly environment.

LALA at Jitlada Thai in Los Angeles

If you had Comcast in May, you has a chance to watch this short on demand for APA Heritage Month. (There was a short on the Kogi Truck. We hope they upload that one too.)

In this episode, Host L.A. Renigen steels her stomach and heads to Jitlada Thai, popular with the Hollywood set and famous for having the best “stinky” and spiciest food in Los Angeles. Lots of interesting food including fried watercress salad, steamed mussels, fishball stuffed with egg in curry, turmeric sea bass, pumpkin lamb curry, and pork belly with stinky bean. LALA by H.P. Mendoza is a fresh and breezy take on Asian cuisine in Los Angeles.
