2011 Slant Film Festival in Houston

2011 Slant Film Festival in Houston

Houston’s Asian American film festival, Slant: Bold Asian American Images, returns for the 11th year with an eclectic lineup that represent the best new works by Asian American filmmakers. From a mockumentary that follows a self-important spoken word artist to a sci-fi tale featuring a malfunctioning android, the five short films selected for Slant tell diverse stories. Slant Film Festival will screen for one night only on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at 7:30PM at River Oaks Theatre, 2009 West Gray. Curator Melissa Hung and filmmaker Soham Mehta will be in attendance.

Works include Fatakra by New York-based, Houston-bred Soham Mehta, winner of a 2011 Student Academy Award. The film, about an immigrant family reuniting after years apart, screened earlier this year at South By Southwest (SXSW). Jaime Lo, small and shy, a charming animation by Toronto-based Lillian Chan, also tells a similar story about a family where one parent works abroad, but from a child’s point of view.

J.P. Chan’s Digital Antiquities and Tanuj Chopra’s PIA are both science fiction films set in the future, but their characters are searching for the past. The program closes with Asian American Jesus, directed by Yasmine Gomez and featuring performer Samantha Chanse as six different characters in a hilarious mockumentary exploring post-racial art and excuses for bad poetry.

SELECTED FILMS:

Jaime Lo, small and shy by Lillian Chan
Jaime Lo, a shy Chinese Canadian girl, observes the world around her through her drawings. When Jaime’s father is sent to Hong Kong for a year-long work assignment, Jaime must use her creativity to cope with his absence.

Fatakra by Soham Mehta
Naveen left India to chase his dreams in America. Three years and a recession later, his wife and son join him. Sparks fly as a family reunites.

PIA by Tanuj Chopra
In San Francisco, in the year 2063, much of human labor has been replaced with service androids called PIAs. One night, a mysterious and malfunctioning PIA appears at Syama Raval’s front door.

Digital Antiquities by J.P. Chan
In the year 2036, a woman in an antique electronics shop meets a desperate young man seeking to recover data from an old CD.

Asian American Jesus by Yasmine Gomez
In this mockumentary, performer Samantha Chanse plays six different characters including Truth is Real, a self-professed ‘mad scientist of the spoken word,’ and the subject of college freshman Suzette Law’s final project for her ethnic studies class.

Go Lala GoBuy tickets

Lala is a hardworking young woman who gets an entry level position at a Beijing company and slowly learns the ins and outs of the business world. As she starts moving up the corporate ladder she becomes involved in an illicit relationship with a co-worker. This soon becomes something that tests both of them and their resolve to either work or romance.

HarmonyBuy Tickets

At the time of her arrest, Jeong-hye was pregnant and ended up giving birth to her son in prison. Moon Ok was a collegiate musical professor but is now on death row for committing a crime caused by the abuse of her husband and mother-in-law. Jeon-hye makes a deal with the warden to form a choral group in order to spend one day outside with her son. Under the direction of Moon Ok, the women of the prison must put aside their differences and come together to form a successful choir.

Redline Buy Tickets

Rev your engines, adrenaline junkies! Redline is a new feature from famed Madhouse studios that reunites animator Takeshi Koike (Ninja Scroll, Animatrix) with his long-time collaborator Katushito Ishii, who is the genius behind Funky Forest: The First Contact. This meeting of warped minds results in a mind-melting psychedelic assault that is easily the wildest animated Japanese film to surface in years.

Every five years, top drivers from across the universe participate in an underground racing competition to see who is the best of them all. The final stage in the competition is called Redline. The race isn’t just about driving skills ― it is about heavily modified cars with nitroglycerin boosters, crazy weapons, and robot appendages. This year, the competition is set to occur (illegally) on Roboworld, a bizarre militaristic planet whose leaders looks like they stepped out of a Jack Kirby comic book.

2011 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival

2011 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival

Visual Communications (VC), the nation’ s premier Asian Pacific American media arts center, announced its program of outstanding films for the upcoming 2011 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (LAAPFF) beginning April 28 – May 7, 2011 at the Director’ s Guild of America (DGA), Laemmle’ s Sunset 5 Theatres, and the CGV Cinemas located in Koreatown.

As Southern California’ s largest and most prestigious film festival of its kind, the LAAPFF launches the celebration of Asian Pacific Heritage Month through this year’ s slate of 180 films from both Asian Pacific American and Asian international directors from 20 countries. Over the past 27 years, the Festival has presented over 3400 films and shorts by Asian American and Asian international artists. This year, 32 feature films and 148 shorts will be showcased throughout the 10-day fest. The Festival will showcase many returning filmmakers and producers who continue to make films and still hold true to their own voices as exemplified by our Opening Night, Closing Night and Centerpiece galas.

Fast Five with Justin Lin

The latest action-thriller from VC/LAAPFF alum Justin Lin, FAST FIVE, kicks the Festival off into high gear on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at the DGA at 7PM. The latest film in the blockbuster series built on speed stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “ Ludacris” Bridges, Matt Schulze, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Tego Calderon, Don Omar, Elsa Pataky, Joaquim de Almeida and Dwayne Johnson. Released by Universal Pictures, FAST FIVE is the third film in “ The Fast and the Furious” series for Lin, who debuted his first solo feature film at the Festival with 2002’ s groundbreaking BETTER LUCK TOMORROW.

“ We are excited and proud to present the Los Angeles premiere of FAST FIVE as our Opening Night film,” states David Magdael, Film Festival Co-Director. “ Justin has been a part of our festival family since he was making short films back in his UCLA days. We remember when we premiered BETTER LUCK TOMORROW nine historic years ago, and now to have his newest Hollywood action-thriller open the Fest is only fitting. Under Justin’ s helm, ‘ The Fast and the Furious’ franchise continues to make film history, as he continues to create some of the most ethnically diverse Hollywood blockbusters.. This night will be a celebration of Justin as one of our directors who continues to excel through the industry and one who remains a true inspiration for our aspiring filmmakers.”

Targeting the burgeoning online community of API filmmakers, “ Interpretations” was designed to encourage and support this emerging talent pool and give these artists a chance to share their unique perspectives and have their work seen by industry experts. The result was phenomenal with hundreds of films submitted and an opportunity to see great work from this often overlooked group of filmmakers. For opening night, Justin Lin and “You Offend Me You Offend My Family” will world premiere the new “ CAR TALK 2” short film starring Sung Kang and R& B singing sensation Tyrese just before FAST FIVE. (See the first Car Talk.) Danny Pudi (star of the hit NBC TV comedy COMMUNITY) and Parvesh Cheena (star of NBC TV’s OUTSOURCED) will host the opening night gala.

Battling the comically dysfunctional members of her family all the way, she makes a break for happiness and fulfillment. Everything is ALMOST PERFECT.
