A Movie Night With James Kyson Lee in San Francisco
East West Players (EWP), the nation’s largest producing organization of Asian American artistic work and the longest-running professional theatre of color in the country, continues its 46h Anniversary season. Themed Languages of Love, the third production of the season carries on with the Mainland Premiere of THREE YEAR SWIM CLUB by Lee Tonouchi. This production is directed and choreographed by Keo Woolford and produced in association with Honolulu Theatre for Youth. The cast of the production features Jared Asato, Kelsey Chock, Aaron Ikeda, John Galmiche, Kaliko Kauahi, Blake Kushi, Mapuana Makia, and Chris Takemoto-Gentile.
This play is inspired by the true life story of Soichi Sakamoto, who trained the youth of Maui to swim in the plantation irrigation ditches on their path to becoming Olympic champions. Set on the island of Maui in the 1930’s, this heartwarming play becomes transcendent as the art of hula becomes the metaphor for competitive swimming.
“I am amazed at the wonderful audience response to the play. Described as an Olympic story, a Hawaiian story, and a feel good story for the entire family, the audience found more resonance” said producing artistic director Tim Dang. “It’s about fulfilling your dreams, finding your voice, feeling pure joy (in swimming), but also how to face adversity, finding family outside of your family, and addressing issues of race and class.”
Honolulu Theatre for Youth (HTY) produces professional theatre and drama education programs that make a difference in the lives of young people, families and educators in the state of Hawai‘i. HTY is committed to producing shows that are about and for the people of Hawaii, and this season they are doing 100% original work.
All performances will be staged at the David Henry Hwang Theater at the Union Center for the Arts at 120 Judge John Aiso St., Los Angeles, CA 90012. THREE YEAR SWIM CLUB currently runs through Sunday March 11, 2012. Performances are
Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 2pm. General Admission tickets range from $26-36.

The San Francisco Bay Area love is strong with the Beatrock Music family. Marin native Eric “Fatgums” Strand, will celebrate with the rest of the Beatrock Music family in the Mission on Saturday, December 17, 2011. The event is open to the public and will celebrate the 2nd Anniversary of Beatrock Music, an independent record label founded by Strand. Beatrock Music celebrates indie Hip Hop creators, many of whom are from the Bay area; championing their political & cultural voice in the underground.
Since the label’s launch in January 2009, headed by founder Eric Strand, the creative journey for each of these artists has kept their ear to the street; coming through with melodies and beats that galvanize a generation. “We are a collective of musicians who create works for more than music’s sake alone” says Strand. “Each artist has a unique perspective, yet there is a common thread of community activism shared by all of us. Our sound and content is honest and for the people.”
Recording artist Bambu hopes that albums on Beatrock Music prompt community action. He says that “Beatrock Music is reflective of the work we put into our music and our accountability to how that music is received. We are all very aware that our music is out there to hopefully inspire & activate folks to attain the social change we need.”
For the 2 year celebration, the love for art & will extend to the visual realm; as the event will premiere a special Beatrock Music art exhibit courtesy of photographer Leo Docuyanan. Docuyanan’s name is already on the radar of many; especially known for his portraits of Bay Area Hip Hop icons. “I was already familiar with his portraits” says Strand, “When Leo first brought up the idea of a collaboration, I was honored that he saw a natural connection between his work and our artists. We are very excited to team up with him.”
Each Beatrock Music artist sat with Docuyanan, shooting their portrait for the exhibit. “Everyone in the Beatrock family has their own individual identity and musical aesthetic” says Docuyanan. Guests will be able to see the visual personalities of each artist, and also see what connects them as musical collective. Docuyanan notes “The sound of the label aims celebrate that golden era of Hip Hop, combined with each artist’s independent and quality driven styles. The music is organic and free-flowing. I’m glad it has been embraced by all walks of life.”
Music fans will be treated to performances from label artists, including: Bwan, Otayo Dubb, Kiwi and Rocky Rivera. The excitement is also building around a special performance from Bambu with Seattle based artist, Prometheus Brown of Blue Scholars. The two just completed a national tour, and have previously collaborated on WALK INTO A BAR, released earlier this year. Bambu hope this will be a night that fans will not soon forget. “They can expect ProBrown and I to wild-the-F-out! Ha!”

Celebrate the holidays with some of the most talented Pan-Asian Hip Hop artists in the community as we take a look back on another great year of music, art, culture, and family. Every year at the Holiday Go!Ohana show there are special giveaways, holiday songs, big surprises, and always lots and lots of Santa hats So come gather around the fire with your OHANA…
The holiday season is a time for sharing and giving. And with the country’s current economic situation, many families are facing difficulty just trying to provide the basics. To help make the holidays merrier for families, 454 Films is inviting the community to its First Annual X-Mas for the Kids Toy Drive. You may not think the guys of 454 Life Entertainment care about the community, but they do. These guys remember their roots and they’re giving back.
“We saw news clips back in October where the local fire departments were in need of more toy donations, and we wanted to help” says Ginorocks, film director and partner of 454 Films. “Our goal is to collect a total of 10,000 toys and pass them out to kids on the day of the event. Then what we have left over we will donate to the fire departments that are in need of them.”
“Working with our sister company 454 Life Entertainment we believe we will be able to achieve our goal of collecting 10,000 toys” the film director continues.
454 Life Entertainment is an independent record label and home to music artists Thai, Drew Deezy and Nump. At a recent autograph signing event, the 454 collective had over 2,000 people at Eastridge Mall waiting in line to see them. 454 Films produces music videos and films (The Chosen One starring Rob Schneider, Missing, Yellow) under the 454 brand.
“We have pulled together local companies to help collect toys by using their locations as drop off spots.” These companies include popular San Jose based apparel company Breezy Excursion, Red Demon Tattoos which was voted one of the Best Tattoo Shops in the Bay Area and Cukui, a unique fashion company and boutique located in San Jose’s Japan Town. Additionally, these companies will help promote the toy drive and bring community awareness.
