UBC LipDub : Raise Your Glass & Celebrity Status

UBC LipDub : Raise Your Glass & Celebrity Status

Last week, UCB (University of British Columbia) released a LipDub video promoting their school and raising money for Make a Wish Foundation. On Saturday March 26, 2011, over 1000 people gathered to rock out and lipsynch to Raise Your Glass (P!nk) and Celebrity Status (Marianas Trench). Lots of different elements in this video. It kicks off with a spoof of the Old Spice guy, then shows off the diversity of the school population along with various student activities. (Looks like a large Asian population over at UCB.) The school campus look pretty fun with unicorns, Power Rangers, scuba divers and more. The most impressive part of the student made video is the helicopter fly over shot. Stay til the end of the video to see some of the behind the scenes action.

Super Mario Fingers by Hok

Super Mario Fingers by Hok

Hok from Quest Crew partially tore his achilles and paroneal tendon during training a few weeks ago, but this doesn’t keep the talented dancer down. He stated, “I was so shocked and gutted that I could not dance like I usually do, however I thought that I needed to change this negativity into a positive one.” He went on to create a special finger tutting session to the tune of Super Mario Bros. The piece reminds us of the short film Represent by Iris Yamashita, where disabilities can’t hold you back from your dreams.

JuBa Films released their second b-boy short film “Big Trouble in Little Bistro”. The comedic short follows two b-boys battling over the last piece of food. Who will be the last b-boy standing? Dancers Gong Bao and Julien Bam do another great job with this piece. Also see their first short “More Than Bread“.

Yo-Yo Ma x Lil Buck

Yo-Yo Ma x Lil Buck

The worlds of music and dance collide in a special piece that puts Yo-Yo Ma‘s cello skills with Lil Buck’s dance moves. It’s an interesting juxtaposition of arts. (Think street ballet meets classical music.) Director Spike Jonze caught it on tape with this message:

The other day, I was lucky enough to be at an event to bring the arts back into schools and got to see an amazing collaboration between Yo-Yo Ma and a young dancer in LA, Lil Buck. Someone who knows Yo-Yo Ma had seen Lil Buck on YouTube and put them together. The dancing is Lil Buck’s own creation and unlike anything I’ve seen. Hope you enjoy.

The event was part of Inner City Arts, the nonprofit arts education center that serves 8,000 at-risk students each year. Listen to more about the performance and event below:

With a Black Swan reference at the end, Yo-Yo Ma jokingly says “Natalie Portman would be proud.” Lil Buck (aka Charles Riley) is a former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet.

Might As Well Step Forward with Quest Crew

In the music video for RJD2’s Might As Well Step Forward, we get to see the breakdancing skills of America’s Best Dance Season 3 winner Quest Crew. It’s a fusion of hip hop and breaking. Play close attention and you’ll notice that every move they make is backwards. Some sick b-boy skills from the guys in purple. The track is off the Inversions of the Colossus album by RJD2. You can get it on Might As Well Step Forward - Inversions of the Colossus or amazon.

Here’s a few more music videos featuring Quest Crew: Dance Like Michael Jackson, I Wanna Rock with Snoop Dogg, and Outta Control with Baby Bash x Pitbull.
