Giveaway: Win “Inception” Promotional Prize Packages

Inception

After coming off a highly successful box office hit, director Christopher Nolan returns to the silver screen to bring you Inception, a psychological thriller that will literally go inside your mind! Touted as one of this year’s hottest summer films, Inception is set to be released in major theaters July 16. Inception’s well-acclaimed cast of  Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy, and Tom Hardy will be sure to bring the excitement and action as anticipated. Here is the official synopsis:

Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan directs an international cast in “Inception,” an original sci-fi actioner that travels around the globe and into the intimate and infinite world of dreams.

Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction: stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb’s rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible—inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse; their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime.

But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.

This summer, your mind is the scene of the crime.

2010 Reel in the Vote PSA Contest

Previously, we’ve posted a few commissioned pieces for the 2010 Reel in the Vote PSA including one with Officer Bart Kwan of Just Kidding Films. The San Diego Asian Film Foundation (SDAFF) is launching a national video contest to help increase voter participation among Asian Pacific Americans (APAs) and independent voters this election year. The contest is called REEL IN THE VOTE campaign, challenging anyone with a video camera and a great idea to help make a difference in 30-seconds.

“Our goal is to generate awareness, excitement, and dialogue about voting in this election year,” says SDAFF executive director, Lee Ann Kim. “One way to do that is to engage artists and the public to create fresh ways to present that important message.”

REEL IN THE VOTE, which is a non-partisan video contest, offers $2000 in prizes for the top three videos, along with travel and lodging expenses to the San Diego Asian Film Festival, October 21-28, 2010. The top three videos will be revealed on the SDAFF website in September, and they will also screen before every film program throughout the film festival.

While the contest is open to the public and free to enter, videos are required to be no more than 30-seconds in length and must target the Asian Pacific Islander community, promote civic responsibility and democratic participation in the electoral processes. Entries will be judged on creativity, originality, and message. The deadline for entries is August 31.

Orient Express by Wong Fu Productions

Orient Express by Wong Fu Productions
As part of the Interpretations Film Initiative, Wong Fu Production created the short film Orient Express. They were given a script with 4 lines and had to create a short no longer than 3 minutes. After watching this short, you’d think it was a companion piece to a David Choi music video like Won’t Even Start or That Girl.

Also part of Interpretations, check out Far East Futura. It’s the same script, but a different concept for the video.

Interpretations Film Initiative

Interpretations Film Initiative

Here’s a cool project for all you aspiring filmmakers. It’s the Interpretations Film Initiative. Basically, there’s one script with 4 lines that filmmakers will need to weave into a max 3 minute short. In case you’re wondering, the four lines are:

It’s not something I’d do.
Well?
It’s not what I expected.
You sure?

So for the filmmakers looking for scripts, you just got one. Read more about the Justin Lin backed initiative below:

Now that technology has made filmmaking tools more accessible than ever, it’s even more important that directors have a distinct point-of-view and understand how to market themselves and their work. However, despite the fact that the web remains an open platform for distribution, emerging filmmakers still struggle with the age-old challenge of gaining exposure and access to influential industry players.

So with this challenge in mind, the YOMYOMF team is launching INTERPRETATIONS – a short film initiative to encourage aspiring filmmakers to develop their own original and unique voice. All participants will create a short film using the same original script. The point of this exercise will be to encourage filmmakers to find their own take on the material and to be as creative with it as they can. The script will be broad and fluid enough so that one director could craft a comedy from it, another a stylish music video, another an action film, another an avant-garde work of animation and so on.

Once the films are submitted, a distinguished panel of judges from both the studio and independent filmmaking worlds will review the submissions. One of YOMYOMF’s collective strengths is its access to people in the industry and the goal is to bring together a mix of different figures including studio executives, producers, actors, directors and others to review the works and select what they consider the “best.” But instead of just having one winner designated the “best,” five finalists will be selected, representing a variety of different genres and styles. For example, an “unpolished” experimental film could be honored alongside a work that is as slick as any Hollywood production. The point is to convey the message that all types of filmmaking will be embraced as long as there is an original vision behind it.

The selected filmmakers will receive a $3,000 cash prize to go toward their next project as well as a one-year subscription to the WGA’s WRITTEN BY magazine. YOMYOMF will also make an attempt to introduce promising filmmakers, whether they are a finalist or not, to appropriate industry mentors to help create more focused opportunities for growth and networking.

As YOMYOMF’s founder Justin Lin explained regarding the origins of INTERPRETATIONS: “Marlon Brando once remarked that the only way the Academy Awards would be a true barometer of who was truly best was if every actor tackled the same role and would be judged on how they interpreted that part. This exercise will embody that spirit so that a 14-year-old suburban kid from New Jersey or a 70-year-old aspiring filmmaker from Taiwan would both have an equal opportunity of creating something memorable.”
