The Office Panel at Comic-Con

Some of writers/actors from The Office went to Comic-Con. The most notable Asian American on the panel for The Office was Mindy Kaling (aka Vera Chokalingam). She plays Kelly Kapoor. The Indian American actress had one of the biggest cheers as she was introduced. Also on the panel was writer Ryan Ko. Great to see Asian Americans as writers for hit shows like The Office.

Heroes Panel at 2008 Comic-Con

The entire cast of Heroes showed up at the 2008 Comic-Con. They showed the premiere episode of Heroes Volume 3: Villians to the crowd. On the panel afterwards, Masi Oka (aka Hiro) busted out some Japanese on the stage. Also an Asian dude dressed up in a Japanese samurai outfit asked some questions, while Masi Oka capitalized on the moment. Season 3 of Heroes returns on September 22, 2008.

CUNY Conference on Asian American Women

The Asian American/Asian Research Institute will host a one-day conference on May 16, 2008 titled Asian American Women: Celebrating Successes, Meeting Challenges, a forum where we will examine past, present, and future challenges and objectives for Asian American women.

Date: Friday, May 16, 2008

Time: 8:30AM to 5PM

Place: CUNY Graduate Center – Elebash Recital Hall

365 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan (Corner of 34th Street)

Asian American women’s experiences and concerns illustrate the heterogeneous and complex histories and interests of this important segment of the U.S. population. This year’s AAARI conference will investigate the landscape of Asian American women’s historical and contemporary experiences, examining and evaluating past accomplishments while maintaining a critical and pragmatic eye to future goals. The conference seeks to explore the manifold realms of Asian American women’s lives from the diverse vantage points of scholars, researchers, business professionals, educators, activists, artists, legislators, writers, and students. During the conference, we will ask ourselves what we have learned from Asian American women’s histories, and how we can apply this knowledge to present and future challenges for our communities.

9th Annual National CAPACD Convention

National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development‘s (CAPACD’s) 9th Annual Convention brings together hundreds of community based practitioners, organizers and advocacy agencies in one of the largest gatherings nationwide. By bringing together actively engaged, ethnically and geographically diverse leaders in the community development field, the Convention is an opportunity to create and share a common vision and agenda, and take collective action to strengthen the APA community development movement.

This year’s theme is “Vision, Voices, Votes: Standing Together for Justice & Equity,” which emphasizes what is needed from our communities in this critical year — and the opportunities we have to lead the way as we address the foreclosure crisis facing the nation, promote long-term equitable development policies and influence a crucial residential election.

The event takes place at:

Sheraton Park Hotel at the Anaheim Resort

1855 South Harbor Boulevard

Anaheim, CA 92802

Part of this event will include the APIAVote Presidential Townhall at UC Irvine
