Master of Business Card Throwing for Samsung

Check out this viral video for the Samsung Digital Camcorder H205. This Asian guys flings business cards like he’s Gambit from X-men. He does some amazing things throwing his cards from popping balloons to putting out candles to more crazy stuff. Kinda reminds us of that Nokia Bruce Lee videos with the nunchucks lighting matches and playing ping pong.

Taiwan loves Costco

Asians don’t just love Costco in the USA. (See Wong Fu Weekends Episode 3) They love it overseas too. Here’s a report about one of Costco’s top performing stores globally. It’s located in Taiwan. They sell a mix of American products such as Tide detergent and Pepperidge Farm cookies along with local items including sea cucumber, mahjong sets, and stewed and braised beef noodle soup. Their food court menu has Peking Duck pizza and fro-yo. Yes, they also still have FREE sample over there too. See the whole story here.

Giant Robot Magazine needs your help

Giant Robot Magazine co-founders Martin Wong and Eric Nakamura need your help to support the print publication. The bad economy couple with rising costs of postage and paper have hurt the magazine. They need at least $60,000 to ensure another year of full operation. Last year, they were on AMEX Small Business Rules. Here’s short statement from Giant Robot:

While diversification allowed Giant Robot to escape the fate suffered by many of our indie publishing peers in the second half of the ‘00s, 2009 was brutal. In addition to several distributors cutting out small press or folding altogether, paper has become more expensive and postage has skyrocketed exponentially. And while there has also been the support of loyal advertisers, the middle class of supporters has dropped, creating peaks and valleys in income that force us to live issue to issue. Complicating matters, store revenues and art show sales have suffered along with the economy, depriving the magazine of resources that allowed it to operate freely and thrive without the benefit or constraints of being part of a large publishing house.

Reducing pages, going from bimonthly to quarterly, or becoming an online entity are not options, and our editorial and production staff of two full-timers and two part-timers (intact since issue 18) is already as lean as can be.

See their full statement and find out ways you can support them here. Or drop by one of their stores in LA, SF, or NYC.

It’s been rough for the handful of Asian American print publications. Last year, AsianWeek ceased print publications. In 2008, remember the Save KoreAm Journal campaign. Hyphrn Magazine seems to be hanging in there tho.

Toyota Vehicle Recall

It’s getting ugly over at Toyota. They are recalling 8 vehicle models to fix accelerator pedals that stick. The Japanese car company will also be halting sales and production of these eight models, including the top-selling Camry and Corolla. The eight models affected represented 57% of Toyota’s sales in the U.S. last year. (Yikes that not going to be pretty.) The recall affects over 2 million cars including:

2009-2010 Corolla

2007-2010 Camry

2009-2010 RAV4

2009-2010 Matrix

2005-2010 Avalon

2010 Highlander

2007-2010 Tundra

2008-2010 Sequoia

Their reputation for top notch quality will definitely be blemished after this. Will they still be able to remain as the #1 car manufacturer after this? Also interesting to note is that the Prius is not on the list. Get more about the recall here.
