That’s What She Said web series

That's What She Said web series

That’s What She Said (TWSS) webseries is the first major project of Pearl Girls Productions. The series chronicles the lives of five fictional characters–Leslie, Rae, Shin, Baby, and Nic–within the queer sphere of the greater Los Angeles area.

TWSS was created out of a desire to see positive Asian representations in the media, as well as to give voice to the often-untold stories of queer Asian women. As it is, Los Angeles holds one of the largest Asian populations in the United States (second only to New York), and is historically significant as a center for media and entertainment. Yet, save for a few examples, they are hard-pressed to find complex, multi-dimensional portrayals of queer Asian experiences.

About Pearl Girls Productions:

Pearl Girls Productions was created through the inception of the webseries, That’s What She Said. As six queer and queer-allied Asian women (and so much more), their hope is that their efforts will positively impact social consciousness through the power of media–in particular (though certainly not restricted to) the spread of positive representations of queer Asians.

Balikbayan travel writing contest

For all our Canadian readers, here’s something you might be interested in.

As technology advances and the world becomes smaller, we are becoming as a nation, increasingly sophisticated and diverse. In this new global landscape, few understand this international perspective as much as Schema Magazine. As one of Canada’s premiere sources for “ethnic cool,” Schema has been making waves with its coverage of pop culture news, feature interviews, and perspectives that speak to the minds of the new multicultural generation of Canadians.  With its popular in-depth feature series, *“But Where Are You Really From?” *Schema asked readers to describe their experiences defining their identities. Now, Schema seeks to probe further into the quest for cultural definition, by hosting Balikbayan, Schema’s first-ever travel writing contest!

In partnership with Dot Asia, Schema invites its Canadian readers to answer this thought-provoking question:

“As a second or third generation Canadian, how has international travel to your country of cultural origin changed your worldview?”

Entrants are asked to submit a 500 – 1500 written submission, photo journal or video describing how their recent travel experiences, or recent connection to their own sense of culture (however multi-layered that might be) have inspired them, changed the way they look at the world, and how they have brought that back to life in Canada as a result.

Winning entries will be published on Schema, with the grand prize winner receiving up to $500 in cash prizes and a free Dot Asia domain name for two years!  Schema will be taking submissions until *November 16, 2010*. Please send submissions to submit@schemamag.ca Complete contest rules can be found here.

Last month’s Rock the Vote concert is over and done, but another video has surfaced featuring Dawen, Esna, and a special guest, James Kyson Lee. The trio covered John Lennon’s famous song, “Imagine,” which was perfect timing since they decided to release the video on what was John Lennon’s 70th birthday.

Remember to register to vote! You can also check out Beau Sia’s Check Yourself spoken word performance.

Collaboratory VIII: Order to Go!

Collaboratory VIII: Order to Go!

If you’re in the Los Angeles area, Great Leap invites you to come out on Saturday, September 11, 2010 for the culminating performance for their annual mentorship program,  Collaboratory VIII, exploring the environmental impact of single-use food containers and utensils.

Hosted by Amy Hill, this performance features the work of artists Janet Dandridge, June Kaewsith, Zumi Mizokami, Ayuko Sato and Shannon Shue. The evening’s festivities will also include performances by Nobuko and friends as well as a live screening of B.Y.O.Chopstix!

As a conscious effort to make their cause known, Great Leap made a music video in order to address the environmental impact of disposable wooden chopsticks. Directed by Dan Kwong and starring Nobuko, this funny yet pointed music video hopes to encourage people to “bring your own” chopsticks when eating out to help the 100 billion pairs of wood chopsticks that are thrown away every year.

Great Leap will be showing this music video at the Collaboratory VIII: Order to Go performance. For more information and to purchase tickets, go here.
