NYC based filmmaker Patrick Ng is about to unveil his short film “Real Talk” at the 2012 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival (SFIAAFF). His thesis film from New York University (NYU) is about how a friendship unravels between an Asian American teenager and his African American best friend. Racism between a majority and minority group have long been examined, discussed, and reflected on, but racism between American minority groups are a underdiscussed an extremely complex topic. REAL TALK sheds light on this complexity in a dramatized scenario. The short is a thought provoking piece about true friendship in the face of “peer pressure,” especially when race plays a role in it.
Recently, the short won the prestigious Wasserman/King Award for Excellence in Filmmaking at NYU’s First Run Film Festival. Previous winners of this award include the Oscar winning short film, GOD OF LOVE (dir. Luke Matheny), Sundance Jury Award Winner for Short Filmmaking, SIKUMI (dir. Andrew MacLean), and PARIAH (dir. Dee Rees). NYU also gave REAL TALK awards in Directing, Acting, Cinematography, Editing, Producing, and Sound Design.
REAL TALK will be screening in the WHITE ELEPHANT short film series at the SFIAAFF. Also look for it to hit other festivals on the circuit soon.
