The worlds of music and dance collide in a special piece that puts Yo-Yo Ma‘s cello skills with Lil Buck’s dance moves. It’s an interesting juxtaposition of arts. (Think street ballet meets classical music.) Director Spike Jonze caught it on tape with this message:
The other day, I was lucky enough to be at an event to bring the arts back into schools and got to see an amazing collaboration between Yo-Yo Ma and a young dancer in LA, Lil Buck. Someone who knows Yo-Yo Ma had seen Lil Buck on YouTube and put them together. The dancing is Lil Buck’s own creation and unlike anything I’ve seen. Hope you enjoy.
The event was part of Inner City Arts, the nonprofit arts education center that serves 8,000 at-risk students each year. Listen to more about the performance and event below:
With a Black Swan reference at the end, Yo-Yo Ma jokingly says “Natalie Portman would be proud.” Lil Buck (aka Charles Riley) is a former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet.
