Over the weekend, Justin Bieber and his back up singers Legaci did a show in the San Francisco Bay Area. A local TV station ran a story about how Asian Americans are trying to break in the main stream music industry. The piece features video clips from Baby by Legaci x Cathy Nguyen x Traphik, That Girl by David Choi, apl.de.ap, Cathy Nguyen, Gabe Bondoc, and Sam Tsui. The internet equalizes the playing field for entertainers. However, Asian Americans still have a tough time breaking to the mainstream.
Asian American artists on YouTube
I think what’s very fascinating is if/when the current Youtube generation of viewers start becoming part of the work force. Most of the Asian American Youtube phenoms typically attract the bulk of the Youtube audience (13-18 year olds) and have been for the past 5 years or so. But once their core audience begin getting past 22 and entering the workforce, well, I’m hoping for great things 🙂
