On Memorial Day, David Choi’s YouTube account (http://www.youtube.com/davidchoimusic) was suspended for copyright violations. Days earlier, David Choi stated that he may lose his YouTube account. (Read the post to get the details on why his account got into trouble.) With his account suspended, his fans have come out to support him. There’s a twitter campaign #FreeDavidChoiMusic started by Ryan Higa along with a Facebook page (Youtube sucks for taking DavidChoiMusic down) and an online petition created by fans:
Dear YouTube,
We (all the David Choi supporters) are really disappointed in Youtube for suspending davidchoimusic channel on May 31st 2010. He is such a talented music artist and a great guy. He honestly doesn’t deserve even the slightest bit to be suspended from YouTube just because of a few covers (which by the way are awesome!) he did. Please bring his channel back to YouTube. Please, YouTube!!
To all David Choi fans and supporters, HELP David get his channel back on YouTube…Together we CAN make a difference! I believe that! We all love David and his music… And if just by signing up to this petition you can help David and support him and his channel, why not raise your voice and make a difference? Let us express how we all feel about this whole issue to YouTube, guys…
And David Choi, we all love you and support you entirely!!!

Besides fan support, David Choi’s been talking with the publishers. He recently tweeted that he may get his YouTube channel back soon. Let’s hope David Choi and the record labels work something out. For those suffering from David Choi withdrawal, Wong Fu Productions still has David Choi music videos up for That Girl and Won’t Even Start.
Update: David Choi’s YouTube account is back as of 6.7.10.
Fellow YouTuber Ryan Higa’s had his account suspended and videos removed before. Here’s a video he previously created

Update: David Choi updates on the current situation. He hopes the publisher will remove some of the strikes against his YouTube account.
Update on 6/5/10: from David Choi on facebook “Update on my account: Waiting until Monday for one of the publishers to take off two strikes. I called and she has to ask her lawyer in the next week. Other publisher, she’s meeting her lawyers and the band’s managers to discuss.”
I personally believe that Youtube has overstepped the boundaries of respecting its users, Artist Promotion and True Copyright. Covers of songs on Youtube of all places should fall into a creative commons law. Us Youtube members are in no way taking any credit or revenue from the people that own, sung, released or produced these songs.
If anything Youtube artists that do covers and remixes are giving these musics vitality, popularity and continuation of a long lasting life. Youtube should be ashamed of throwing its Members off (espcially the super talented Mr CHoi) for sharing these videos, and musics.
I really hope they return your account mr choi
Don’t complain about youtube. It’s the copyright law in the United States that’s screwed up because the giant corporations who managed to get it enacted have companies like youtube scared out of their minds!
Get involved in politics and vote for politicians who will repeal draconian laws like the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and won’t pass even worse laws restricting freedom.
