We’ve posted about the film Dark Mattter in the past. A few years back it was on the Asia American film festival circuit. The movie already had a DVD release and now has found its way on to Hulu. This film isn’t for everyone. Dark Matter is loosely based on the 1991 University of Iowa school shootings. Here’s more about the film:
Dark Matter delves into the world of Liu Xing, a Chinese science student pursuing a Ph.D. in the United States in the early 1990s. Driven by ambition, yet unable to navigate academic politics, Liu Xing is inexorably pushed to the margins of American life, until he loses his way.
The films give some perspective of the struggles of overseas students studying in the United States. Also take a look at the Dark Matter website. It has a great section to help facilitate discussions about Asian cultural assimilation, campus violence, and science education.
