In 1994, Eric Nakamura published a magazine full of pop culture Asian-influenced treasures called Giant Robot. The trend caught on and Giant Robot has since grown into a mini-empire, with retail stores in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York, a gallery and a restaurant. They were the first to sell Ugly Dolls.
